Environmental Cooperation Program - Ecotourism Promotion Study

Client Name Ministry of the Environment, Japan
Country Mongolia

Description

The Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism in Mongolia and the Ministry of the Environment in Japan agreed to cooperate bilaterally on the policy of environmental protection through the Japan-Mongolia Environmental Policy Dialogue. Since ecotourism is targeted as one of the tools to raise awareness for environmental protection, the study launched in September 2008 and continues to March 2011.

This study aims to promote ecotourism, which is a new concept in Mongolia and has potential to generate additional sources of income and employment opportunities, substituting livestock industries which may have detrimental effects on the environment. The study establishes a sustainable framework of handling ecotourism and strengthens local capacity such as developing eco-tour products and improving guide techniques at the selected three model areas. Through analysis of the activities at the model area, the study made an ecotourism manual for relevant stakeholders and potential actors.
