Client Name Japan International Cooperation Agency
Country Bangladesh

Description

Bangladesh has made considerable progress in achieving its original goal of “Education for All” with gross enrollment rates at the primary level rising from 76% in 1991 to 97% in 2001. However, from the viewpoint of quality and equality of education, the country had not achieved the desired progress, as about one third of children drop out before completing the five-year cycle. A nationwide sample survey of primary school students completing class five carried out by Education Watch in 2000 showed that: (i) only 1.6 % of children acquired all of the 27 basic competencies tested in the survey, (ii) only 9.4% of the children achieved the desired progress in English, (iii) only 11.6% of the children in Mathematics, and (iv) only 17.3% in General Science. The objective of this project was to improve the quality of teaching in science and mathematics in real settings. In this project, the counterpart institution is the National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE) which is providing training to instructors of Primary Teacher Training Institute (PTI).
